Imagine if the American natives had had an opportunity to more fully adopt a “steppe nomad culture” with the introduction of horses to the America’s. . It was only guns a d disease that allowed the white man to eradicate them. If the western plains Indians had developed a “raider hun or Mongolian like society then westward expansion would not have happened. Imagine if the whole of the Louisiana purchase had eventually become a giant nomadic reservation with the Mississippi rive like the Danube, a boarder between lifestyles.
But I think that to their credit the native Americans were actually more Peaceful inclined than any of the Eurasian comparables. Indeed Native American kind of represented a middle ground between nomads and settled society. They are often classified as semi-nomadic, ironically because they did not have horses until relatively late in their society’s existence. If they had one more generation of warrior braves raised in the saddle, that would have been truly formidible. If they had had 20 more years to coalesced into a more fully nomadic tribal confederation they would have terrorized the Oregon trail Pioneers At first I thought that maybe the technological advent of guns might have yielded cavalry obsolete, but it would not have prevented them from incorporating cannon artillery, liek teh Ottomans did in the 1400s. If they had seized strategic mountain passes defensible with heavy cannon artillery in the Rockies they could have effectively prevented west ward expansion south of the Missouri River. The US Army would have had to take up it's own defensive posture to frontier settlers from raids instead of taking the fight into the wild west. Effectively a cultural and political demarcation would have developed along the condimental divide.
